In 2023 the studio produced two of its own compliance courses for sale through Go1: a food safety course for the service industry and a 4-module course on gender discrimination in the workplace. I contributed to production on both, and owned testing and publishing.

The situation

The studio sells its own courses to organisations worldwide through Go1. In 2023 it added two compliance topics: safe handling of food for people working in hospitality and retail, and gender discrimination at work.

Both courses had small teams. The studio's director led the food safety script, an outside writer and a subject matter expert shaped the gender course, and a studio designer led the builds. I was involved in every other stage apart from the filming, from scripts to publishing.

My role

With a designer leading the builds, I did less of the design and more of everything around it. On the food safety course I contributed to the script, helped edit the videos and subtitles, and did some of the design work. On the gender course I edited and formatted the scripts and prepared the scripts for filming and voiceover. On both I owned testing and publishing.

What I did

Prepared scripts for the people on camera and behind the microphone

For the gender course I turned the main script into separate video and voiceover scripts for the actors and the voiceover artist. Each person saw only their own lines, so they could focus on their part. I also edited the scripts and checked their formatting.

Helped produce the food safety course

I contributed to the food safety script, which the studio's director led. I helped edit the course's 9 videos and add subtitles, and did some of the design work in Rise alongside the designer, who led the build.

Tested every version and fixed what I could

I tested each module before it went out for review or publishing. As on other projects, I made small fixes myself rather than sending them back to the designer. Before the final gender module was published, for example, I fixed the assessment review function and produced the restricted version Go1 needed.

Published and restructured for the marketplace

I published each module to the studio's own LMS and to Go1, and worked with Go1's content team on the premium library submissions for the gender course. Its final module was published there in July 2023.

Both courses later moved to a modular structure. In March 2023 the food safety course was split from one long module into 4 shorter ones, and I updated the script and published the new modules to Go1 in April 2023. In 2024 the gender course was also offered as separate modules on Go1.

Results

  • A food safety course published to Go1 as 4 modules with 9 videos and subtitles (April 2023).
  • A 4-module gender discrimination course published to the studio's LMS and Go1, and submitted to Go1's premium library (final module published July 2023).
  • Testing and publishing owned for both courses.

What I'd do differently

  • Plan for modules from day one. Both courses were later split into smaller modules for the marketplace. Designing them as separate modules from the start would have saved a rebuild and a republish.
  • Keep captions, transcripts and scripts on one change list. A change in one often needed a change in the others. A single list, checked at every release, would stop them drifting apart.
